Agro and food chains

The Netherlands is the world’s second largest agricultural exporter, after the US, and the agro and food sector is one of the mainstays of the Dutch economy. The production of dairy and meat products, in particular, is a major contributor to climate change, because of the associated greenhouse gas emissions, not only in our own country but also in the countries where fodder is sourced. These activities account for 10% of Dutch carbon emissions, with other food-related activities accounting for a further 10%. There is plenty of scope for improvement: sustainable fodder produced with due respect for soils and  biodiversity, more efficient processing, and logistics that minimise food spoilage.

What can CE Delft do for you?

CE Delft performs environmental analyses of numerous foods and beverages, including soft drinks, beer, milk, juices, coffee, tea, meat and meat substitutes. It also provides consultancy on concrete improvements, usually developed in brainstorm sessions with clients, analyses environmental impacts and calculates price tags.
Over the past few years we have had extensive experience performing environmental lifecycle assessments (LCAs) of food production chains, including agricultural aspects like soil organic material balance, fertiliser inputs (including waste materials), use of waste streams as animal fodder, and waste prevention. By relating substantive issues to policies at both the national and European level, CE Delft can provide solid advice to industries and policy-makers alike. This knowledge we use in LCAs, the results of which we then elaborate with insights on financial and policy-related issues. This combination makes CE Delft a unique player in the consultancy market for agro supply chains.
Another unique facet of CE Delft’s expertise is our in-depth knowledge of protein chains, developed for the Questionmark smartphone app (formerly known as ‘Superwijzer’) that allows consumers to evaluate the environmental impact of protein products. The information in this database is indispensable for protein product producers seeking to improve their products’ environmental footprint.

Tools

In many cases we not only lay down the results of our analyses in a report or database for LCA calculations, but also translate them into a practical computer tool allowing you or your customers to rapidly assess variations in your product, transport distances or recycling percentages, for example. A good example of an comprehensive tool is that developed for the Dutch trade association for the clothing and textiles industry, Modint, covering a very broad range of textile raw materials and processes.
