Bio-electricity & Heat

As a power plant fuel, biomass is a relatively cheap and cost-effective option for reducing emissions and this is one of the key focuses of our research. In evaluating the various options, airborne emissions are an ever-recurrent theme. We also carry out environmental scans to assess the net CO2 balance and cost of alternative biomass resources for power generation, from palm oil and cocoa husks to wood wastes. One of our studies has shown, for example, that co-firing wood wastes is preferable to recycling it as chipboard. Besides these more technical analyses, we also conduct policy reviews, in which the main focus is on the (cost-)effectiveness of individual policies and policy packages.

Our clients include the Dutch ministries of Environment and Economic Affairs, NL Agency, the Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment and a number of energy companies.
