System Integration – Hybrid Energy Infrastructures

The Dutch ‘Top Sector Energy’, one of the programmes of the Netherlands Energy Agency, sought advice on elaborating the R&D agenda of the Top Consortium for Knowledge & Innovation on Energy with respect to flexibilisation of the Dutch electricity market based on hybrid energy infrastructures. This report, written in partnership with DNV GL, reviews the most promising options for such flexibilisation, identifies relevant barriers and makes recommendations for further development and implementation of the concepts involved.

The report elaborates these concepts with reference to technical options for Power-to-Gas, Gas-to-Power, Power-to-Heat and Power-to-Cooling. In the analysis, the potential for delivering ‘flexibility services’ via these options through to 2030 is described against the background of a series of scenarios for developing the Dutch energy system, followed by an analysis of barriers to developing such options.

The recommendations for the R&D agenda were expounded on at the Congress on System Integration of the Top Sector Energy held in Apeldoorn on 21 April 2015.
