Carbon footprint of construction equipment

The European Rental Association (ERA), representing construction equipment rental companies, commissioned CE Delft to look into the environmental impact of the use phase of ten selected types of construction equipment, such as excavators, boom lifts and power drills. We created a carbon footprint calculator which calculates the life cycle impact of each equipment type, based on five use-influencing parameters, including hours of usage per year, fuel efficiency, transport distance to job site and proper end-of-life recycling. The calculator compares two scenarios, permitting comparison of efficient and inefficient use.

The project was performed in close cooperation with SGS Intron and Climate Neutral Group. CE Delft presented the results at the ERA convention in Madrid and hosted a workshop related to the subject.
