CO2 reporting for container transport: Guidelines and calculation rules

For a long time, there was no standard for calculating and reporting CO2 emissions from transport activities. The publication of ISO 14083:2023 has changed this. The ISO standard provides guidance for calculating CO2 emissions, but the guidelines are not always straightforward to interpret and allow for a degree of flexibility. This can create uncertainty regarding the correct application of the standard.

To provide clarity on the proper application of the ISO standards, a guidance document has been developed. This document has been prepared for the calculation and allocation of CO2 emissions from the road transport of maritime containers.

In order to align with the day-to-day practice of container road transport, sector-specific choices have been incorporated into the methodology. Using the specific guidance provided in this document, road hauliers and software developers should be able to develop software capable of calculating the CO2 emissions of each maritime container transport movement by road and allocating these emissions to the customer.

This will enable road hauliers to comply with the requirements set out in ISO 14083:2023, forthcoming European legislation, and/or the requirements imposed by their clients.
