Economic radar of the biobased economy in the Netherlands

 

At the request of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, RVO.NL, and the BBE Programme Directorate set up by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, CE Delft has carried out an initial, reference calculation of the economic value of the BBE in the Netherlands. To this end the share of renewable (biobased) feedstocks for products and materials in the chemical industry and other non-food sectors was determined. The report also provides an initial estimate of the size of the BBE for the materials, energy and chemicals sectors. The results have been used for the RVO publication ‘Monitoring of the Dutch Biobased Economy, 2013’ (in Dutch).

The main results of the study:

• In terms of added value, the Dutch BBE was worth € 2.6 to 3.0 billion in 2011. 
• The total share of BBE in the materials, ene01rgy and chemicals sectors was about 0.5-0.6% of the total Dutch economy. 
• Together, the materials, energy and chemicals sectors provided 29,300 to 33,400 jobs (FTE) in 2011.
