Feasibility analysis: climate neutral by 2040

CE Delft, together with Kalavasta and Berenschot, has conducted a study to determine whether it is possible for the Netherlands to become climate neutral by 2040. This study forms part of a judicial case brought by Greenpeace and eight residents of Bonaire against the Dutch state. The study examined the feasibility of each sector from different perspectives: policy-related, economic, socio-economic & cultural, environmental, technological and spatial. In addition, a number of interrelated themes were examined, such as the infrastructure, including the electricity infrastructure, and the use of raw materials.

Although the study concludes that the Netherlands could become climate neutral by 2040, it also highlights the major challenges involved. These challenges differ per sector: in the area of mobility, for example, this involves the availability of emission-free options for inland shipping and mobile equipment. There are also challenges that affect all sectors, such as network congestion and funding.

The report can be assessed here (only in Dutch).
