The key question addressed by this study is how energy consumers are to see climate-neutral heating as a realistic option – for unless consumers and building owners do so, today’s gas-fired heating systems will not be replaced by climate-neutral alternatives. Despite numerous municipalities already actively debating this issue, as yet no concrete decisions have yet been taken when it comes to replacing gas-fired central heating by such alternatives. The main reason is that energy consumers are very content with gas-fired CH, while climate-neutral systems will on average be € 1,000 more expensive per year per dwelling than today’s gas-fired systems.
