KLM Downsizing. Consequences for the Dutch Leisure Traveller

Schiphol and KLM are under pressure to downsize from various angles. This report examines the potential consequences of a reduction in KLM’s operations for Dutch leisure travellers.

A reduction in KLM’s size has limited impact on Dutch leisure travellers. The outcome depends on the choices KLM makes:

  • If KLM chooses to maintain all of its current destinations, flight frequency to these destinations will decrease (by approximately 15%), and ticket prices are expected to rise by an average of € 16.
  • If KLM opts to reduce its network and focus more on leisure destinations, popular holiday routes will largely remain unaffected. On some routes, ticket prices may even decrease slightly (on average –€ 9). The 24 least-used leisure destinations would be dropped from the schedule, but are generally still accessible via alternative routes, although this may lead to longer travel times.
