Social Value of the Vlietland Nature and Recreation Area

The Vlietland nature and recreation area covers approximately 300 hectares in the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg. The presence of this area generates a range of economic and societal welfare benefits, including recreational opportunities, carbon sequestration, increased biodiversity, cleaner air, and improved health for residents. CE Delft has assessed the value of these ecosystem services in a quick scan.

The results highlight the importance of the area for nature, visitors, local residents, and businesses in the region. For each category of benefits, we qualitatively illustrate what is at stake in the (hypothetical) absence of Vlietland or in the event of a partial transformation of Vlietland-Noord into Dutch Lake Residence (DLR).
