The spatial exploration of CO₂ transport and storage started in May 2021. During three workshops, information from other spatial plans including programmes and projects was collected together with government authorities to determine what needs to be taken into account spatially in the plans for CO₂ transport and storage. These workshops were held for the Rotterdam Rijnmond and Amsterdam North Sea Canal regions.
Based on the information collected, a list was prepared of the known initiatives for the transport and storage of CO₂, such as the location and time, and how they relate to each other. Whether there are any spatial obstacles to realisation was also examined.
The spatial exploration will be completed in November 2021, after consultation with all initiators and workshop participants.
The plans are mainly focussed on the transport of CO₂ from the Maasvlakte to empty oil and gas fields in the North Sea. In addition to a description of the technology of CO₂ capture, transport and storage, and a description of the different initiatives, the report also contains an impact analysis. The main conclusions are that the plans described no longer overlap, they appear to be spatially compatible based on a first analysis and they appear to match the amounts of CO₂ that industry wishes to store (the storage requirement).
