Vision for Sustainable Industry in Zaanstad

The Municipality of Zaanstad wants to be climate-neutral by 2040 at the latest. Zaanse industry is responsible for a large proportion of the greenhouse gas emissions in the municipality. CE Delft has therefore investigated the sustainability options for the industry and how the municipality can provide practical assistance. The industry can already take steps in the short term by looking at energy savings and the use of heat pumps. For long-term sustainability, options such as hydrogen, electrification and residual flows plus external heat, need to be examined carefully. Because the processes in the industry in Zaandam take place at relatively low temperatures, electrification is often possible. The municipality can accelerate the process of making the industry more sustainable by actively managing the Omgevingsdienst Noordzeekanaalgebied, being well prepared for the construction of new infrastructure and by conducting or commissioning further research into the possibilities of geothermal energy. In addition, we advise the municipality to strengthen its cooperation with industry, for example by drawing up a covenant with concrete and non-binding agreements for both parties, based on the model of the national green industry policy. The environmental effects of sustainability and public support for the industry should also be taken into account.

The Vision document is available on this page, the extensive report is available on request from theĀ Municipality of Zaanstad.
