What does a Plastic Hero save?

Recycling plastic packaging materials is good for the environment. On the website www.plasticheroes.nl (the reference is to the name under which consumer plastic waste is collected in the Netherlands) Nedvang provides several examples with which the benefits can be clearly envisaged. CE Delft has elaborated three new examples:

• Separate collection of a waste shampoo flacon yields CO2 savings comparable to the emissions from the energy to burn a 6 W low-energy CFL for 26 hours.
• Separate collection of the plastic packaging discarded by one person in the course of a year yields CO2 savings comparable to the emissions due to driving a car 57 kilometres.
• Separate collection of the plastic packaging discarded by all Dutch households in one year yields CO2 savings comparable to the annual electricity consumption of 100,000 households.
