Over the past few years CE Delft has taken numerous steps to reduce the environmental impact and carbon footprint of its activities. In early 2016 we decided to visualize the measures we’ve taken and their impact using the ‘Eco-barometer’, a tool that measures an organization’s environmental performance and carbon footprint and is currently used by over 2,500 companies.
Minimal environmental impact compared with branch-average
Besides the data for the Eco-barometer 2015, where possible we’ve also included data for the last few years (excl. transport) to show the reductions we’ve achieved since 2011. We only started calculating the environmental impact of our commuting and business travel in 2015. The bar chart compares CE Delft’s eco-impact (column 5, incl. transport) with the branch-average (column 6) and shows that ours is around one-third of the average.

How was the impact reduced?
In the reference year 2011 it can be clearly seen that CE Delft consumed far less gas and electricity than the branch-average. This was due to the thorough insulation of our office premises and energy-saving measures like low-energy lighting and efficient office equipment implemented before 2011. In 2013 the impact of replacing our central-heating piping and installing a high-efficiency boiler kicked in. As the whole system became streamlined, workplace comfort increased, too. In 2015 the volume of electricity bought from the grid declined, thanks to the solar panels on our roof, which supplied some of our electrical power.

The grid-sourced electricity consumed by CE Delft is a mix classified by the Eco-barometer as green power from Dutch biomass, wind power, hydroelectric and solar. Our gas is natural gas for which the supplier arranges CO2 compensation, counted by the Eco-barometer as 'green gas' with zero net carbon emissions. Together, this means the electricity and gas we use is â€˜zero carbonâ€™. Because we advise other parties not to include â€˜greenâ€™ electricity and gas from the grid in their company environmental performance, however, weâ€™ve counted our grid power and gas as if it were â€˜greyâ€™ rather than â€˜greenâ€™.
