Energy-intensive industries. Challenges and opportunities in the energy transition

In March 2020, the European Commission presented its proposal for “A New Industrial Strategy for Europe”. This document underpins the important role of industry in the transition to a carbon-neutral economy. Industry must reduce its carbon footprint and at the same time accelerate the transition by providing affordable, clean technology solutions. These efforts should be supported by policies and financial instruments at EU and national level, as well as by the private sector.

There needs to be particular focus on energy-intensive industries (EII),  as their large carbon footprints make their transition to carbon neutrality especially challenging. This study, commissioned by the European Parliament and ITRE, explores how EU EII can make this transition while maintaining, and ideally improving, their global competitiveness.
