The Municipality of Nijmegen wishes to gain insight into the development of its CO₂ emissions in order to monitor progress towards its climate targets. It therefore commissioned CE Delft to determine the municipality’s emissions in 1990 and 2021, and to produce projections of CO₂ emissions for 2030, 2045 and 2050, based on national developments and specific policy measures implemented by the Municipality of Nijmegen.
Under current policy, the Municipality of Nijmegen will achieve a 57% reduction by 2030, 70% by 2045 and 76% by 2050. The decline of industry in the Municipality of Nijmegen and the decarbonisation of the national electricity grid are the main drivers behind the emission reductions achieved since 1990.
