High Temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES) is an underground heat storage technique that stores heat in water in existing subsurface layers. The use of existing subsurface layers makes the technology relatively low-cost to build and enables the deployment of systems with a high heat-capacity. HTO can increase the capacity of a heat network, increase the sustainability of mid- and peak loads, and increase the heat use from baseload sources. The Rotterdam-The Hague Energy Region sees significant potential for HTO.
Commissioned by the Rotterdam-The Hague Energy Region, CE Delft and Greenvis have gathered existing knowledge on HTO and supplemented it with expert insights in various sessions. The result is a practical guideline that provides civil servants and policymakers with the knowledge required to make informed decisions about HTO development.
This guideline covers what HTO entails, the conditions that must be satisfied for its deployment, its financial implications in different use cases, and the steps different actors must take to successfully develop HTO.
