Identifying criteria for determining whether a ship produces reduced quantities of waste and manages it in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner

This report identifies criteria to determine whether a ship produces reduced quantities of waste and manages that waste in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner. It is concluded that a single set of criteria applicable to all vessel types and all ports is unfeasible, given the differences in the amounts and types of ship-generated waste and varying circumstances in ports.  A menu of criteria that ports can apply is therefore proposed.

The report was commissioned by the European Commission, DG MOVE, in preparation for a delegated act for the Port Reception Facilities Directive, Directive (EU) 2019/883.

The report was drawn up by CE Delft and CHEW.
