As part of the European Green Deal it was announced that the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) may be extended to include emissions from road transport and the built environment. The European Commission intends to present a legislative proposal for this in July 2021. Road transport could be included in the current EU ETS or in another, yet to be determined ETS variant.
In response to the Commission’s intention, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management would like to know more about the effects of including road transport in the ETS. The Ministry is particularly interested in information about the potential added value of such an instrument compared with other (European and national) climate policies for road transport and the interactions between these different types of instruments. At the request of the Ministry, CE Delft will be assessing these issues In the coming months.
