Italian waste incineration in the Netherlands. An environmental analysis

AEB Amsterdam (AEB), a waste processor, plans to bring Italian residual waste to the Netherlands for incineration. In Italy, this waste would be landfilled because it does not have sufficient incineration capacity. CE Delft has analysed the environmental difference between landfilling in Italy or incineration with energy recovery in Amsterdam. AEB has several transport routes in mind, and each route can be made using trucks or a combination of trucks and train transport.

CE Delft performed the analysis by means of life cycle analysis. In this case, this method identifies the environmental impact from waste disposal to final disposal. We report the results of the ‘climate impact’ and a weighted environmental score that includes a wide range of environmental effects.
