Potentially available recycled material from post-consumer textiles

When textiles are no longer suitable for (re)use, they can be recycled. However, recycled materials are still rarely used in textile products. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W) has asked CE Delft to provide insight into:

  1. How many textile fibres could become available through fibre-to-fibre recycling, assuming there are no barriers in terms of collection, sorting by textile type, and recycling capacity.
  2. To what extent the current demand for textiles in the Netherlands could be met with this supply (in theory).

The research will focus on the suitability for recycling, fibre composition, and types of recycling processes. These insights will help policymakers make decisions regarding ‘closing the loop’ in textile policy.
