So much is possible with local flexibility!

Flexibility in electricity consumption (also referred to as DSR – demand side response) occurs when parties such as households or businesses shift their electricity use over time in response to a signal. Local flexibility can therefore make a significant contribution to alleviating grid congestion, reducing energy costs, and preventing the curtailment of renewable electricity.

This study maps out, for households and businesses in 2030 and 2050, which share of electricity demand can realistically be shifted. In addition, it identifies the proportion that can be expected to be unlocked under both a low and a high development pathway. Achieving the high development pathway requires additional policy measures. The three main barriers and corresponding policy measures are identified in this study.
