Space for circulair economy at Amersfoort

Amersfoort aims to become a circular city by 2050. Achieving this goal requires additional facilities, such as sorting installations, recycling plants, and repair centres. However, the space available for circular activities on industrial estates is under pressure. Land is scarce and increasingly contested by competing functions such as housing and office development, which are steadily encroaching upon industrial areas and their environmental zones.

In spatial planning decisions concerning the allocation of Amersfoort’s limited space, the importance of the circular economy is not yet always sufficiently recognised. This is partly due to the lack of a clear picture of the future spatial requirements for circular activities. For this reason, the municipality of Amersfoort has asked CE Delft to estimate the future spatial needs for circular activities.

This report focuses on the spatial requirements related to the circular transition in the construction sector, the waste processing sector, and the repair and refurbishment of consumer goods within Amersfoort’s industrial estates. In addition, it outlines spatial measures the municipality can take to support and facilitate this circular transition.
