Sustainable procurement pays off

Inspiration guide: sustainable procurement can also yield financial benefits

CE Delft was commissioned by PIANOo to collect and describe ten practical examples revealing that sustainable procurement can be cost-neutral and in some cases even yield financial benefits. This study refutes the idea, prevalent in many government organisations, that socially responsible contracting and purchasing (CSRI), i.e. ‘sustainable procurement’, is tantamount to ‘more expensive procurement’. As a result, many excellent opportunities for CSRI are sometimes not included in procurement processes. This doesn’t have to be the case.

The inspiration guide ‘Sustainable procurement pays off’ contains ten practical examples that broadly illustrate the applicability and benefits of sustainable procurement. The guide contains practical examples from three sectors: Civil and Hydraulic Engineering (GWW), Office Facilities and Services, and Transport. The examples include large organisations, such as the national government, the four largest cities in the Netherlands (Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht), and semi-public organisations, as well as smaller municipalities. Five of the six CSRI themes are addressed.
