About Coen

On 1 March, 2021 I joined CE Delft’s Supply Chain Analysis sector as a researcher/consultant. The complexity of sustainability issues fascinates me. In my work I use Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to establish the environmental footprint of sustainable initiatives and advise on which elements of the life cycle have the greatest environmental impacts and how to reduce them.

Before coming to CE Delft I worked at Leiden University’s Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML), where I completed my doctoral thesis on application of LCA in the development of new energy technologies. Timely identification of potential future environmental impacts of a new technology means those impacts can be addressed in the R&D process. In the course of my doctoral work I carried out LCAs on various topics, including fuel production from CO2 and atmospheric CO2 capture, which sparked a continuing interest in use of CO2 as a feedstock. Another focus of my work was dealing with the methodological challenges involved in using LCA for the assessment of new and future technologies.

Alongside my doctoral studies I was employed as a teacher at Leiden University for several years. As a teacher I developed LCA course materials and taught LCA to MSc students. Prior to that I worked at an environmental consultancy, where my work focused on corporate energy efficiency, and served as a maritime officer on chemical tankers.
