An exploration of the climate policy of the Municipality of Molenlanden. Update 2023

The municipality of Molenlanden aims to be CO2 neutral by 2050 and, with other municipalities in the Alblasserwaard region, is aiming for 49% CO2 reduction in 2030 compared to 1990. To achieve these and the other sustainability targets, the municipality has compiled the Sustainability and Climate Implementation Programme 2023-2026 (Uitvoeringsprogramma Duurzaamheid en Klimaat 2023-2026). This sets out the activities the municipality intends to undertake to become CO2 neutral, circular and climate-proof by 2050.

In 2022, CE Delft calculated the implementation programme and determined the effects of the municipality of Molenlanden’s policies on greenhouse gas emissions in the municipality. In 2023, we updated the calculation of effects based on the most recent situation. The calculation shows that the municipality of Molenlanden is no closer to achieving its 2030 target (see figure). Under current policies, the municipality will achieve 26% reduction by 2030 and a 46% reduction by 2050. The largest emissions come from mobility and agriculture, but the policies of the municipality are mainly in the areas of built environment and land use. Additional policy efforts on mobility and agriculture are therefore necessary.
