An exploration of the climate policy of the Municipality of Molenlanden

The goal of the Municipality of Molenlanden is to be CO2-neutral by 2050 and, together with other municipalities in the Alblasserwaard region, to reduce CO2 emissions by 49% by 2030 compared to 1990. To achieve these and the other sustainability objectives, the municipality has prepared the Sustainability and Climate Implementation Programme 2022-2025 (Uitvoeringsprogramma Duurzaamheid en Klimaat 2022-2025). This outlines the activities the municipality intends to undertake to become CO2 neutral, circular and climate proof by 2050.

The municipality asked CE Delft to calculate the effects of the Implementation Programme and determine the impact it would have on the municipality’s greenhouse gas emissions. Our calculations show that the municipality will not meet its climate targets with its current policies. Based on current policies, the municipality will achieve 27% reduction by 2030 and 38% reduction by 2050. The largest emissions are generated by mobility and agriculture, but the municipality mainly has policies focussing on the built environment and land use. Additional policy efforts in the areas of mobility and agriculture are therefore needed.
