Factsheet on electricity storage options

At the request of NP RES, CE Delft has produced a factsheet on the role of electricity storage. What technologies are there? What role do they play in the energy system? What options do they offer or not offer? The factsheet provides objective answers to these questions.

The purpose of the factsheet is to inform cooperating parties in the RES regions about the options and impossibilities of electricity storage. It is an aid in discussions about the contribution of different forms of electricity storage in the region, and in making choices in this regard.

The factsheet covers the following techniques:

  • Different scales of batteries:
    • Home batteries
    • Large battery of generator/consumer
    • Grid battery with its own grid connection
    • Innovative battery technologies
  • Temporary conversion (hydrogen)
  • Compressed air energy storage

A number of other techniques that are less technically advanced, but are often mentioned as interesting storage techniques, are also discussed:

  • Liquid air energy storage
  • Underground pumped-storage plant (O-PAC) and basins
  • Flywheels

The factsheet has been agreed with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat), the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties), the Association of Provincial Authorities (Interprovinciaal Overleg, IPO), Association of Netherlands Municipalities (Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten, VNG), Union of Water Boards (Unie van Waterschappen), Netherlands Association for Sustainable Energy (Nederlandse Vereniging Duurzame Energie, NVDE), Energy Storage NL and Netbeheer Nederland.
