Reuse of paving bricks. Summary of final report

Paving bricks, made mainly from clay, are used to create hard surfaces both in and out of built-up areas. When an area is repaved the bricks are often reused at the same or another location. A mass balance was drawn up for the year 2019 to answer two questions:

  • What percentage of paving bricks are reused after major maintenance work?
  • What is the average functional lifetime of a paving brick?

It was concluded that there is 70-89% brick reuse on municipal streets, implying an average functional lifetime of 95-190 years for a brick first used in 2020. The reuse percentage on these streets is most likely 80-83%, with a functional lifetime of 130-140 years.
