In this annual report, we present the deployment and sustainability of biomass used in Dutch coal power plants in 2025. This report is based on the annual conformity declarations of the energy companies. The energy companies submitted confidential detailed data at the delivery level. Due to competition regulations, this data is presented in aggregated form in this report.
Biomass use In 2025, a total of 1,792,972 tonnes of biomass were deployed to replace coal in power plants, representing a 13% increase compared to 2024. The biomass used in 2025 consisted of 97.6% by mass of residues from the wood-processing industry. The total biomass deployment in the power plants in 2025 consisted entirely (100% by mass) of biogenic waste and residual streams (Category 5). In 2025, the biomass used primarily originated from North America (43.5%) and Asia (42.5%), with an additional 14.0% coming from the European Union.
Sustainability The Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) conclude in the annual conformity declarations prepared for the energy companies that the biomass was deployed in accordance with the sustainability requirements of the Regulation on Conformity Assessment of Solid Biomass for Energy Applications in the calendar year 2025, thereby complying with the legal sustainability requirements.
