When in doubt: leave the gas network in place

Based on an analysis of how Enexis, a regional network operator, can best anticipate a climate-neutral energy supply and a revised role for its gas network, we conclude that it is best to leave the gas network in place, except when a heating network is installed or when all gas connections in an area are cancelled. This approach is the best way to deal with uncertainties regarding the price and volume of climate-neutral gas.

The Netherlands’ energy supply system requires drastic change if the country is to become climate neutral by 2050. The current network-bound energy system comprises approximately 70% natural gas and 30% electricity and heat. Natural gas will eventually be phased out and partly replaced by green gas and hydrogen. The role of electricity and heat distribution is increasing. The gas network has an essential role to play in the future climate-neutral energy system and will not cease to exist in the next 25 years.
