Scenarios for energy carriers in the transport sector

What might a future sustainable transport sector look like? On a commission from the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, CE Delft has collaborated with ECN and TNO to draw up a series of scenarios for the future energy mix of the Dutch transport sector, drawing on discussions with relevant stakeholders. The government’s climate target for the transport sector is a 60% cut in CO2 emissions by 2050, and the scenarios provide a picture of the various ways this can be achieved, with interim results for 2020 and 2030. The study also assesses the effects of such developments in terms of costs, air quality, green growth, security of supply and safety, as well as identifying technological and other constraints. These scenarios represent a first step towards an integrated vision on the future energy mix of the Dutch transport sector, elaboration of which is one of the key issues agreed to under the Energy Agreement for Sustainable Growth.
