Dealing with provincial scarcity

In a previous study conducted for Natuur & Milieu (N&M), CE Delft demonstrated how ‘efficiently’ different sectors in the Netherlands deal with the scarcity of available energy, grid capacity and space. In that study, we compared the economic value added of various sectors in the Netherlands with their energy consumption, land use, greenhouse gas emissions and health impacts. This research shows:

  • how demand for and supply of (sustainable) energy are expected to develop in each province;
  • the pressure this places on grid capacity and land availability;
  • which sectors place a significant demand on the future (sustainable) energy supply, and how this relates to their economic and societal value added.

The aim of this project is to provide a clear picture, at provincial level, of the expected developments regarding energy demand and availability, grid capacity and the space required for energy infrastructure. For each province, we specifically examine expectations concerning energy supply, the share of the energy supply taken up by different sectors, the energy infrastructure required to meet this demand, the space needed to realise this infrastructure, and the scarcity of grid capacity.
