The municipality of Molenlanden aims to be CO2 neutral by 2050 and, with other municipalities in the Alblasserwaard region, is aiming for 49% CO2 reduction in 2030 compared to 1990. To achieve these and the other sustainability targets, the municipality has compiled the Sustainability and Climate Implementation Programme 2023-2026 (Uitvoeringsprogramma Duurzaamheid en Klimaat 2023-2026). This sets out the activities the municipality intends to undertake to become CO2 neutral, circular and climate-proof by 2050.
In 2022 and 2023, CE Delft calculated the implementation programme and determined the effects of the municipality of Molenlanden’s policies on greenhouse gas emissions in the municipality. In 2024, we updated the calculation of effects based on the most recent situation. The calculation shows that although the municipality of Molenlanden has moved closer to achieving its 2030 target, the targets will not be achieved with current policies. In fact, our study shows that the municipality will achieve 38% CO₂ reduction by 2030 and 52% by 2050.
The climate policy of the municipality of Molenlanden consists mainly of measures aimed at making the built environment more sustainable. Additional policy efforts are required in the areas of agriculture and mobility.
