Factsheet – Reducing climate impact across the supply chain

The climate impact of procuring products and services is largely caused by emissions within the supply chain. A hotspot analysis carried out by CE Delft for the Municipality of Rotterdam shows that the municipality’s own energy use and transport account for only around 10% of the total climate impact. Significant gains can be achieved by purchasing less, or by procuring differently, particularly in the Ground, Road and Water Engineering (GRWE) sector.

The avoided climate impact resulting from purchasing less or differently is at least 1.5 times greater than the combined climate impact of the Municipality of Rotterdam’s own energy use and transport in 2035.

This factsheet provides example calculations for GRWE projects and examines alternative procurement approaches for roads, sewerage and sand in greater detail.
