Fuel options for greenhouse gas neutral shipping

In the period 2021 to 2025, CE Delft, in collaboration with ABS (lead) and Arcsilea, was contracted to provide a series of studies for the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), analysing different fuel options that potentially allow maritime shipping to become greenhouse gas neutral.

In four studies, biofuels, ammonia, hydrogen and three synthetic fuel types (e-diesel, e-methane, e-methanol) have been analysed in a consistent manner, covering the following aspects:
1. Availability, sustainability, and suitability of the fuel types;
2. Techno-economic aspects and safety of the use of the fuels;
3. Safety and environmental standards, regulations, and guidelines relevant for the use of the fuels by ships.

The safety has been assessed by means of Hazard Identification Studies (HAZIDs).
