4i-TRACTION: Climate policies for the 2020s

CE Delft is a participant in 4i-TRACTION, an EU-funded project that brings together nine partners from seven European countries. Its main aim is to analyse what a transformative EU climate policy might look like. Based on a stock-take of existing climate policies and their performance, it will outline several different policies and develop an overarching governance framework for EU climate and energy policies. The project will describe how the current EU policy-mix should evolve in the 2020s in order to be on course for climate neutrality by 2050. The project is structured around four transversal key challenges, the “4 I’s”: Innovation, Investment, Infrastructure and Integration.

The project started in 2021 and will end in 2024.

CE Delft contributes its expertise on energy, infrastructure and economic analysis to 4i-TRACTION. We will conduct an ex-post quantitative analysis of European climate policy, develop pathways for future transformative climate and energy policy and provide leadership for an ex-ante assessment of core policy instruments for the future policy mix. Furthermore, we  will provide support for all work packages of the project by providing the topic lead for infrastructure, one of the four ‘4i topic leads’ to ensure consistency of the 4i approach across work packages. In this capacity, CE Delft will support infrastructure-related work throughout the project.

Some examples of deliverables that have been published so far in this project:

  • Making EU Climate Policy Fit for Climate Neutrality, a policy brief
  • Transformative Change to Achieve 1.5°C: a EU Member State Assessment, a policy brief
  • Policy Pathways Towards a Climate-Neutral Europe, a report
